who is eligible for membership in the NJHS at Rocky Run?
In accordance with national standards set by the National Junior Honor Society, students will first qualify for an invitation through their demonstration of success in the area of scholarship. Students in 7th grade with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 on a 4 point scale will receive an invitation to complete an application at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Students will then fill out and return the application forms which include student information and contract that are to be signed by both the student and parent. Applicants are also required to submit an essay and include a $15 check for their membership dues. Therefore, just because a student qualifies based on their cumulative GPA (scholarship), they will not automatically be inducted into the NJHS.
who chooses inductees into the NJHS at Rocky Run?
After students fill out and return all of the required forms, all of their qualifications will be reviewed by the Rocky Run Faculty Council. The Faculty Council is a group of faculty members who make the final decision about who will be invited for induction into the NJHS. Following the Faculty Council’s decision, parents and students will be notified of the final decisions and the procedures to be followed for the induction ceremony.
When are inductions?
Rocky Run holds two Induction Ceremonies each school year. 7th graders are inducted at a ceremony in the Rocky Run gym during the 3rd Quarter, around mid to late March. Rocky Run holds an 8th grade Induction Ceremony during the 2nd quarter. Those 8th graders who are new to Rocky Run, who were not eligible, or did not respond to the invitation to apply for the March Induction and have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 will be invited to apply after the 1st quarter.
what do you do in njhs?
The goal of NJHS is to build leaders and perform service work. We have a general membership meeting for all NJHS members at the beginning of the school year. Normally, this will occur on the first late bus day. At this meeting, students who are running for NJHS office will present themselves. We will also review NJHS rules and expectations for members as well as go over an outline of the plans for the Chapter for the year. Some of the activities completed over the past years have included canned food drives, toy and game collections for the National Children’s Hospital, book mark contests, support to the Fairfax County Homeless Shelter, and the making of blankets and toys for animal shelters. Student members are required to complete 30 hours of community service. Some of these service hours can be the same hours used for service learning in Civics.
What happens if a student maintains a 3.75 GPA and completes the 30 service hours?
NJHS members who maintain the minimum GPA of 3.75 and complete a minimum of 30 service hours will be awarded their NJHS pin at a Pinning Ceremony usually held in the Rocky Run Gym on the last Thursday in May. Those members failing to meet the GPA or service hour requirement will not be invited to participate in the Pinning Ceremony and will not receive their NJHS pin.
what is the importance of the pinning?
The NJHS pin is the symbolic representation of that member’s fulfillment of all of the requirements of the Rocky Run Chapter and the National Organization. Receipt of this pin at the annual Pinning Ceremony is an important milestone for the student as it further shows that the student carried through in their commitments to themselves, their school, and community.
does membership in njhs affect future memberships?
NJHS membership is separate from and not considered when students enter high school. Whether or not you join NJHS will not affect future membership in NHS. Please note that each high school has its own admission requirements.
how are officers selected?
NJHS members wishing to run for one of the five (5) officer positions, (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Historian and Parliamentarian) will apply in writing. Application forms will be available on Blackboard and in the Library in September. Students will complete these forms by the due date and return to Mr. Fontz in the Library. At the General Membership meeting (to be held on the 1st late bus day in the first quarter), these applicants will introduce themselves, and read their prepared speech. Members will be instructed on the on-line voting procedures at this meeting. Once voting is complete (usually within five days), the officers will be announced and an NJHS Officer Installation Ceremony will take place at a location and time to be determined.
what about transfer students?
Students who have been admitted into the NJHS at their previous school and transfer to Rocky Run are eligible to be members of the RRMS Chapter. These students will be required to provide proof of their induction. This proof can be a copy of the induction certificate, or an email or letter from the previous school. However, these students will be required to maintain the 3.75 cumulative GPA and complete 30 service hours.
